The studio of Clare HumphryPerhaps because I pursue a complex angst-driven immersion in the deep and murky world of the human psyche, with an interest in how humans interact in private, public and political spheres, I also have a corresponding need for cool, simple and soothing abstractions. These two conflicting aspects to my personality drive my artistic work in different directions. One indulges in a conceptual approach with a wealth of symbolic words and pictures, and the other draws me to subtle natural colours, simple shapes and organic processes. At some time in my future career these two aspects may come together to form a more unified body of work, but at present they remain separated into different lines of approach. The dissertation I produced for my degree was on the way ceramics have been used throughout the centuries as a subversive means for political protest. But my issue driven tendencies are tempered by a background in contemplative practices and plenty of time spent immersed* in nature. *(Sometimes literally if the canoe capsizes!) |
